Calling all former Illawarra Steelers players and officials. You are invited to be at the Steelers Club next Friday for a reunion before the St George Illawarra Dragons host the Brisbane Broncos in their NRL match at WIN Stadium that night. The "Rusty Steelers" plan to make this reunion an annual occasion."This is the first year. We really want to kick it off, then we intend to have it as an annual event at the last WIN Stadium home game each year," former Steelers hooker Sean O'Connor said yesterday."We really encourage all past players, officials, directors, anyone who was associated with the club, to attend. They're all invited."Hopefully it will kick off with a good number this year, then we'll build on it each year."Because a lot of our database is old now and out of date, we really encourage people to spread the word and let as many people know about it as they possibly can."Among those "Rusty Steelers" attending will be the "happy hooker" himself, Michael Bolt, who played about 10,000 games for the club, or so it seems, and scheming halfback Greg "Bluey" Mackey, who will reminisce about his bag of tricks.Bolt, who finally kicked a goal in his last game, disputes that it was from in front of the posts on a still, sunny day, and insists it was a couple of centimetres in from touch into a howling southerly buster.Mackey reckons the old forwards claim they're so ugly because they ran off his passes. It's going to be that sort of event in the vein that "the older we get, the better we were".The function will kick off at 5pm at the Steelers Club before the former Steelers go across the road to WIN Stadium at 7.30pm for the big game between the Dragons, playing in their red strip, and the Broncos.Anyone who would like to attend is asked to please phone Amanda Parkinson at the Steelers Club on 4227 2255.
