Lake Illawarra police were called to home in Dapto after reports of a verbal altercation between a man and a woman at about 11.30am.
Upon arrival, the woman told police the man had an unregistered gun at his Horsley home.
The man had already left the woman's home to return to his own before police arrived on scene.
Police then went to the Bong Bong Road home where they arrested the man and seized the unregistered guns.
The incident sparked residents interest and several took to Facebook to try and find out what was going on.
The man was taken to Lake Illawarra police station where he was charged with possessing two unregistered firearms.
Police said one was real and the other was fake but made to look like a real gun.
He was also charged with not correctly storing the guns.
The man will appear at Wollongong Local Court on Tuesday.
