Officers were called to Boorowa Rd, Narrawa around 3pm on Sunday following reports of a burnt out car in bushland.
Police said it appeared the car had lost control and left the roadway and travelled through a paddock and hit a tree.
The car then caught alight and was completely destroyed, police said.
Crime scene had been established and investigations were continuing to determine the identity of the driver.
Mr Pearce went missing on April 24 and his parents Jo and Gary have pleaded for anyone with information about his whereabouts to come forward.
On Thursday Mrs Pearce said it had been a difficult couple of days since police informed them of the crash and they now had the anxious wait to see if the body was in fact their son.
"It brings a lot more questions than answers if it's him," Mrs Pearce said.
"I'm still holding out out hope that it's not him."
It seems the accident would have occurred the night Gary disappeared, if he is indeed the driver.
Mr and Mrs Pearce have attended the crash site and now are awaiting Post Mortem examination results.
They have asked that people respect their privacy until they have news one way or the other.
People with any information are asked to call Lake Illawarra Police on 4232 5599 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
