They were staring at their World Cup campaign ending in heartbreak, but now need to deliver against Jamaica to keep their hope alive in the knockout rounds.
This can be the making of great teams, down by two goals and coming back to win 3-2 in the high-pressure situations like that.
And we've seen how much their best players can deliver on the big stage, Sam Kerr being the superstar of course, but Illawarra's Caitlin Foord showing she is among the best attacking weapons at this World Cup.
Their combination will prove vital in pushing the Matildas deep into the tournament, as the opportunity presents itself, after the great escape against Brazil.
The Matildas will need to win six straight games - Brazil to stay alive, Jamaica to qualify, then four knockout rounds - to win the ultimate prize.
It's daunting, but they also have the right mentality.
They've had a harder edge about them since losing to Italy in the opening game.
"I think the biggest difference is that we feel this is our time and this is our World Cup," Foord said.
"With previous ones we have had a bit of a younger team and less experience.
"That feeling of being knocked out is not a good feeling. We know the team we have and our potential and that's where the difference is here and there is the belief within the team that we can win this."
The Matildas were ranked No.6 in the world coming into the competition, they're no longer just a rising nation content to compete with the world's best.
The win over Brazil shows they mean business, especially after being backed into a corner following the loss to Italy. So all that matters right now is one game and one win.
They can worry about their round of 16 opponents if and hopefully when they make it through, with Brazil and Italy to meet in the other game, the goal difference coming into play if the Brazilians win.
If the Aussies make it through, they can go all the way.
