Wollongong City Council is replacing the pipes which feed water into the suburb's pool - infrastructure that dates back to the Second World War.
The pipes are at the southern end of Thirroul Beach and mean the contractor will be constrained to working around the tides, seas and swell, according to a council spokesperson.
They said the majority of Thirroul Beach would not be affected and there would be limited access to the rock platform between Thirroul and McCauley's beaches while the work is underway.
It's anticipated the work to be complete in spring, depending on weather and sea conditions.
Thirroul pool was forced closed on occasion last summer due to algal bloom and sewage contamination.
