Cancer battle ends for respected judge

District Court judge and University of Wollongong Foundation Dean of Law Jack Goldring has died after a battle with cancer.The 66-year-old passed away at his Austinmer home on Tuesday night. Judge Goldring was appointed Dean of Law in 1990 and held the position until 1995. He left the university in February 1998 to become a District Court judge.His associate, Lynne Kohler, said his death would be felt by many."He was quite an incredible man and very much part of the Wollongong community," she said."There are so many lawyers who have been taught by Jack Goldring over many, many years and through many law schools."Judge Goldring practised law in Sydney and New York and has been a member of the NSW Law Reform Commission, contributing to the Anti-Discrimination Act."He was described by many colleagues as an intellectual powerhouse of the District Court," Ms Kohler said."He was extremely admired and loved."University of Wollongong Dean of Law, Professor Luke McNamara, said the university still benefited from Judge Goldring's legacy."He was responsible for establishment of the law school and much of the reputation we enjoy now is attributed to Jack," Prof McNamara said."One of the things I remember most about him is he had an understated way of encouraging his staff and students. He was not a man for grand statements, but encouraged and led by example."Prof McNamara said Judge Goldring played an important mentoring role for many academics, including himself, and maintained an association with the university as emeritus professor.Judge Goldring's funeral will be held tomorrow at Wollongong City Memorial Gardens in Berkeley Rd, Unanderra.
