CONDITION OF TRAVEL
In his letter to the Illawarra Mercury (June 21, 2019) Matty Ryan has presented a very accurate account of real life for commuters in our overcrowded and poorly serviced train travel world.

But behind this overcrowding is a very real and sinister threat to the health and well being of all passengers, the train's air conditioning.
The air conditioning units on our trains are designed to deliver an air flow perfectly matched to the number of seats in the carriage. There is positively no allowance whatsoever for the additional loading of extra passengers standing up and clinging on.
The air conditioning units themselves in no way purify expelled air, they merely heat and recirculate what they pick up from inside the carriage. If a passenger coughs and sneezes the germs get reallocated to another passenger.
Overcrowded trains pose a terrible health threat to all who travel in them. Travel at your peril.

LAW OF ENFORCEMENT
It may be time to rid ourselves of laws that do not appear to be acted upon by the authorities. Examples are, for example, bike helmets.
We have all seen people of every age, riding bikes whilst not wearing a required helmet. There is even an advertisement on television, for a local bank (previously a well known regional building society) showing a child riding a bike with no helmet recklessly through neighbours' yards while being pursued by a running adult.
Another? Double unbroken lines. Drivers today seem oblivious to the relative restrictions as it is quite commonplace to see illegal U turns etc
Another? Jay walking. This is often accompanied by a fierce concentration on a phone, seemingly ignoring legal traffic flow.
If these are no longer deemed to be dangerous, maybe they should be struck from the statute books. If not, maybe they should be enforced.

Ronald Reagan's presidential campaign of the 1980s included economic policies for cuts in tax rates, but the tax cuts did not cause tax revenue to rise, tax revenue fell, what ensued was the largest peacetime increase in the government debt in the history of the US.
There is no credible evidence that lower tax rates lead to a rise in taxation. In fact, in Australia a smattering of companies (foreigners included) pay no tax at all.
It is perceived in recent times Donald Trump has not learned a lesson. The 2017, $1.5 trillion, Trump tax plan to lower corporate tax rates from 35 to 21 per cent has had a considerable impact on the revenue intake by the US Treasury-the result-a 31 per cent drop in corporate tax revenue for the year ended 2018.
And where are the figures to say that a tax cut in Australia won't end up the same or even worse. Surely the government wouldn't rush willy-nilly into cutting taxation without a proper audit to establish the consequences.
The Australian economy is in a precarious state, a better approach would be to use Kevin Rudd's Keynesian economics to systematically create a productive workforce and increase taxation revenue.
