The US Geological Survey (USGS) says an earthquake of magnitude 7.5 struck in the remote area of Indonesia around 11am on Monday.
Office workers were seen throughout Darwin outside buildings after feeling the earthquake.
One worker, Robyn, said no alarm had gone off but workers had decided to get out of the building anyway.
She said it was the strongest she had ever felt in Darwin.
Geoscience Australia said the earthquake struck at a depth of about 220km and had also been felt as far afield as Western Australia's Kimberley region.
The Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre and Australian Bureau of Meteorology issued statements saying there was no current tsunami threat to Australia.
St John's Ambulance said there were no reports of injuries.
