People shouldn't be afraid of the word "sustainability" and be open to how small changes can have global impacts, according to organisers of Shell Cove's Re:New Festival.
The eight-day event starting Saturday aims to encourage people to work towards a more sustainable future through various events from a fashion show to beach cleanup, vegan markets and an entrepreneurial pitch presentation.
Don't think you'll have to join Greenpeace to make substantial change, as festival ambassador, model and activist Laura Wells believes it's the little things that count - like using a Keep Cup or reusable bag.
It's all about new outlooks and new habits and new opportunities and new ways to inspire and influence the world around you.
- Laura Wells
Ms Wells will be part of a fashion runway to highlight how much waste can be saved by clothes swapping with mates or going to an op-shop.
"In Australia every 10 minutes, we throw away [to] landfill 600 kilograms of textile waste which is clothing," she said.
"The fashion industry itself [equates] to 10 per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions - we can reduce that by buying secondhand, mending, reusing, swapping with our friends."
For skeptics of climate change, Ms Wells said it's better to act and do something rather than nothing as there is nothing to lose but good health.
"The effects of doing nothing is exponential, but if we're wrong about human induced climate change (which we're not) but if we act now anyway we're not going to be in a worse spot in the future," she said.
"It's all about new outlooks and new habits and new opportunities and new ways to inspire and influence the world around you."
