Emergency services were called to reports of a person had been hit by a vehicle on Shell Cove Road just before 3.15pm.
Four NSW ambulance crews rushed to the scene.
The ambulance rescue helicopter, based at the Illawarra Regional Airport, was also called to accident and landed at Dawes Park.
A NSW Ambulance spokeswoman said a nine-year-old boy had sustained leg and pelvic injuries.
He was flown to the Sydney Children's Hospital at Randwick in a stable condition.
