When Australia's 27th Governor General David Hurley was sworn in on Monday it was a chance for his Wollongong family and old school friends to reflect on how far he has come.

Born in Wollongong in 1953 Mr Hurley grew up near the lake at Warrawong. On recent visits he recalled how his childhood and schooling at Port Kembla served him well in preparing him for his career.
"I am a product of all the Port Kembla schools".
Mr Hurley said he received a good education at Port Kembla High and will never forget how good the first 18 years of his life living at Warrawong were. "It was a really happy free life. I was taught well and I had a very supportive community behind me. What I remember most is growing up without any concerns or cares".
At an Illawarra Connection dinner he once recalled cruising down Crown St in his late teens in search of the best hamburger. And how 53 per cent of the children in his senior class at Port Kembla High were new Australians.
