The protest, which had similarities to street theatre, was staged by Extinction Rebellion Wollongong whose main concerns revolve around coal mining and climate change.
Protesters marched from MacCabe Park at midday to meet with three sombre women cloaked in red, before pretending to die dramatically and fall to the ground near the mall amphitheater.
All the while they held placards so passers by could see what they were fighting for: slogans like "stop Adani", "RIP Earth", "climate justice" and "panic - your house is on fire".
Key organiser Toby Thompson said they targeted a busy time in the mall so to create awareness about the "catastrophic climate crisis".
"We hope council will take notice and hopefully in coming months declare climate emergency," he told the Mercury.
"By doing so we hope they will influence the [federal] government even further to take more measures."
Mr Thomspon also hoped their protest would influence the public to become more conscious of how their daily activities may harm the planet and encourage them to do more.
"So maybe driving less, saying no to Adani ... and everyday sort of habits that they can change," he said.
"I've recently become vegetarian and don't eat meat, I've been driving less, and speaking people a lot more around the environment around me and telling people not only is it the stolen land it's a dying environment we need to protect."
Extinction Rebellion Wollongong are looking to instigate more protests in the future including taking part in the Global Climate Strike on September 20.
