Crews were called to Cawley Street at about 11.25am on Tuesday.
The fire was behind Holy Spirit College near the lagoon.
Crews from Corrimal and Thirroul attended.
A Fire and Rescue's acting duty commander Andy Barber said crews had contained the fire.
