The man, aged in his 80s, was driving along Lawrence Hargrave Drive before he crashed into a carport and the front wall of a house near Scarborough fire station about 10.25am.
Fire and Rescue acting duty commander Andy Barber said the carport had partially collapsed and there was small damage to the home.
The driver was able to get himself out of the car.
Scarborough and Bulli Fire and Rescue crews responded as did Wollongong's Technical Rescue truck.
NSW Ambulance paramedics assessed the man who was complaining of chest pains.
He was taken to Wollongong Hospital in a stable condition.
Scarborough fire station deputy captain Anthony Pingnam said no one was home at the time but the homeowner, who lived in Sydney, had stayed there on Monday night.
He said the car hit the corner of the building hard and there could be structural damage.
The car was towed away safely after rescue crews propped up the carport and power was disconnected.
Police also attended the scene.
Endeavour Energy were also on scene to isolate power and made the scene safe.
