Officers responded to reports of an object floating in the water at City Beach near Wollongong Lighthouse about 6.30pm.
Water police officers retrieved the body which was taken to Port Kembla police jetty for examination by crime scene investigators.
The body has not been formally identified and police wouldn't confirm whether it was male or female.
A police spokeswoman said investigations were continuing, but initial inquiries suggested the circumstances were not suspicious.
