Not one to mince words at the best of times, Magistrate Michael Stoddart was so appalled by Robert Anthony Marshall's driving record in court this week that he delivered a blustering assessment of the 35-year-old's apparently dim grasp of the road rules.
"I don't know whether you're a slow learner or just an idiot," he told Marshall.
"You've had nine drive suspended or disqualified in the past and this is number 10.
"What's so hard about not driving?
"You just seem to be blatantly ignoring the law".
Court documents said Marshall, a self employed electrician, was driving a Subuaru WRX on the Princes Highway on June 25 when he was pulled over for a random breath test at Bulli.
He tested negative for alcohol but returned a positive reading for the presence of methylamphetamine.
Police found an ice pipe concealed down his underpants during a pat-down search.
He was also found in possession of a Mastercard in another person's name. He told police he'd been given it by a friend a week earlier.driving while disqualified and having suspected stolen goods in custody.
He pleaded guilty to both charges in court this week, explaining that h'e'd been going through "a bit of a crisis" when committing his earlier driving offences.
"Well you made a dumb decision to drive on this occasion didn't you?" Magistrate Stoddart told him.
He sentenced Marhsall to three months' jail and disqualified him from driving for another 12 months.
