Port Kembla company Infinity Energy Solutions will install 12 solar panels on the main container bar for the October event to use the sun's rays to power the operation.

They have also partnered with organisers for the 2020 event to expand the operation and continue to offset their carbon footprint.

Owner Michael Negro said he was also in talks with the Illawarra Folk Festival in using solar, and hoped the project at Yours and Owls would prove a successful case study for other Australian events.

"People are becoming more energy conscious," Mr Negro told the Mercury.

He noted an increase in the number of Illawarra households switching to solar in the 15 years he has been installing it, some because they want to save money while others want to save the planet.

This year festival organisers have again partnered with Bushcare Wollongong to assist in a regeneration program, which has already been established at Puckey's Estate.

They're running a ballot for volunteers to help with weed control and planting on August 22. Each of the 30 volunteers selected will receive free tickets to the two-day music event at Stuart Park.

"The younger audience do have environmental awareness and providing this opportunity allows them to do a practice like bush regeneration but with peers who have a combined interest in music," said Yours and Owls bush revegetation officer Lyle Hunt.

"On the day itself you've got very like-minded people that enjoy music, arts and culture but also concerned about the bush.

"I feel like it is attracting more intrigue to bush care and environmental awareness."

Other green initiatives at the two-day festival include compost bins, reusable cups and water bottles.

Volunteers from Plastic Free Wollongong will also roam the grounds to explain to patrons how they could reduce single-use plastics in their lives.

Environmental initiatives used at the 2018 Yours and Owls Festival diverted 10.4 tonnes (equal to eight 1998 VL Commodores) from landfill, according to organisers. Around 4.5 tonnes of food waste was composted and 500 native plants were planted at Puckey's Estate.
