Wollongong City Council accepted a tender to replace the 12 year old equipment at Charles Harper Park in Parks Street.
The new playground, which will cost more than $237,000, has the tick of approval from children and parents with many being included in the consultation process.
Kids will be protected from the sun with new shade structures built overhead, there will be better seating for parents, and there artwork panels will feature designs from school students.
Ceramic shells made by preschool and primary students will also form the basis of a dry creek bed play area.
Wollongong City Council Lord Mayor Gordon Bradbery said the new playground would help encourage children in Helensburgh to go outside, be active, play and build their social skills.
"Put simply, they are opportunities for fun and a good time with parents and carers having a break watching their kids enjoying themselves," he said.
Work will start in September and is expected to be completed by November, good weather permitting.
