Colourful recreations of Wollongong's lighthouses now brighten up a section of the city, thanks to artist Brett Ashby. The former Mt Keira man, who now lives in Melbourne, installed his new collage, which uses visual elements associated with the area, on the corner of Keira and Crown streets on Saturday. Ashby previously used his photo montage technique to create a portrait of Barack Obama, using more than 300 digital images taken from travel snaps. The work was then selected for two US exhibitions. Ashby said he enjoyed the chance to work on such a large-scale project like the lighthouse artwork and hoped residents would enjoy his creation."It's a good way to get art in the community," he said.Ashby said he drew inspiration from the places he lived in and visited."I've lived in Europe, I've lived in America and living in Wollongong inspired me too," he said."I really loved the coastal lifestyle, the climate and the beach. The South Coast is definitely an enjoyable place to live."
