"We believe that every student can and will learn throughout and beyond their time at our school," principal Gill Hendry said.
"We value our responsibility to provide an effective learning environment where students will reach their full potential.
"Our supportive school environment is created by welcoming and respecting all students, staff and community members.
"We are committed to empower our students to become life-long learners."
Students at Para Meadows are immersed in a communication rich school day with high expectations that every student has a voice and their voice is valued throughout all interactions.
Across the school, staff utilise a combination of low tech and high tech communication systems to provide all students with appropriate means to communicate needs and wants, comment on daily learning and engage and interact with their peers and staff.
Throughout the day the students and staff will utilise a multimodal approach to communication; this may include visuals, key word signing, and voice output devices such as switches, applications on a tablet and Eye Gaze technology.
All students have the capacity to learn, based on their individual development and ability, and have the right to be provided with the conditions to learn so that they can be the best that they can be.
"At our school, each and every student will receive differentiated instructional approaches to match their learning styles, be supported with the necessary tools to participate and be provided with high quality programs in all areas," Gill said.
"Technological advances provide many students with very complex learning needs the opportunities to interact with not only the curriculum but their peers and families for the first time."
The development of communication skills opens up learning in all Key Learning Area's (KLA's) and is instrumental as a pathway to being literate. It is often a key component in the reduction of challenging behaviours.
Communication development needs to be systematically planned and implemented in collaboration with therapists and families.
Collaborative programs are designed to develop students' expressive and receptive language skills allowing the students to be active members of society.
