The proposal seeks consent for use of the former bowling greens for operating a Saturday Market comprising 72 stalls and associated parking area.

The original development application lodged in February to council received 11 objections, though assessing officers recommend the panel approve the markets subject to a restricted consent period of two years.

Concerns raised in the objections were mainly regarding the suitability of the site as related to traffic/parking, suitability for another market in the area, noise and safety.

The weekly event would include fresh local produce, food, local sustainable artisan and handmade products, re-purposed and recycled products from 8am to 6pm.

The proposed use expects to attract approximately 200 people at any one time. The stalls would be set up across two bowling greens, while a third green would be used for parking.

In their recommendation, council's assessing officers considered the products at the market would not be in direct competition with the existing retailers in the area.

They also expected the markets would likely to attract more people to Bulli and with the potential to have mutual benefits for business owners in the town centre.

Currently there are multiple market operators in Bulli, with the nearby showgrounds hosting weekly Sunday markets of a similar nature.

The showgrounds also host regular entertainment events like festivals and greyhound meets.

The Wollongong Local Planning Panel next meets on Wednesday August 14 in council offices.
