Oyster farmers are helping to identify and restore natural oyster reefs as part of a project to increase the health and productivity of NSW estuary systems. Oyster reefs play a vital role in filtering water, protecting shorelines and supporting productive estuaries.
Over the past 150 years natural reefs in NSW have been largely lost due to a combination of historical over-harvest, catchment impacts and disease.
DPI has worked with the NSW oyster industry to identify 102 reefs across the state, providing valuable information for future restoration work under the NSW Oyster Reef Restoration Project.
This mirrors work being done in other states and apart from improving water quality, it is expected that the fish nurseries will flourish and provide recruitment fish stock for the enjoyment of recreational anglers.
