A 17-year-old male has died after a single-vehicle car accident at Kanahooka on Tuesday night.
Police have been told the car was travelling on Lakeside Drive, has left the road and hit a tree about 8.45pm.
The teen driver has died at the scene and is yet to be formally identified.
Two passengers were also seriously injured.
An 18-year-old woman sitting in the back seat suffered serious internal and leg injuries. She was airlifted to St George Hospital in a serious but stable condition by rescue helicopter, according a NSW Police spokeswoman.
While a 17-year-old male in the front passenger seat suffered a broken arm and multiple abrasions. He was able to get himself out of the crushed vehicle, but taken to Wollongong Hospital in a serious but stable condition.
Six ambulance crews and the Toll ambulance helicopter attended the scene.
A Fire & Rescue NSW spokesman said three rescue appliances were called to the scene because the driver and female were trapped inside the vehicle.
He said the jaws of life had to be used to cut them out, the last person being extricated at 9:57pm.
Lakeside Drive was closed in both directions for some time.
A crime scene has been established and officers from Lake Illawarra Police District are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.
