De Gruchy was released from Long Bay Correctional Complex shortly after 7.30am on Thursday.
He was driven out the front gates by "someone of his own choosing", according to authorities.
The car stopped briefly at the facility's main boom gates for De Gruchy's papers to be checked and then drove away from waiting media.
After 23 years behind bars De Gruchy, now 41, was deemed fit for release by the NSW Parole Authority.

He has strict conditions including that he not enter the Illawarra or Shoalhaven Local Government Areas.
De Gruchy must also not contact, stalk, harass or intimidate any of the family members of his victims, many of whom live in the Illawarra.
He is allowed contact with his father and his new family who live in Tasmania.
They have indicated they will actively help him while he is on parole and starts his adult life on the outside.
De Gruchy was 18 when he was sentenced to a maximum 28 years in jail for murdering his mother Jennifer, 41, sister Sarah, 13, and brother Adrian, 15, in their Shearwater Boulevarde home on March 12, 1996.
Jennifer and Sarah were found slaughtered in their beds and Adrian dead in the garage.
Jennifer's head and facial injuries were so severe the coroner required blood-match samples to identify her.
Sarah also sustained significant head and facial injuries. Adrian had 21 wounds to his face and neck, and had been doused in petrol.
De Gruchy arrived at the home the next morning to tearfully "discover" the bodies.
He maintained his innocence, but a jury thought otherwise.
De Gruchy's June hearing was called after the State Parole Authority "formed an intention to grant parole" in May.
De Gruchy himself has expressed concerns about his ability to reintegrate into society and has actively taken steps for life on the outside.
He has been told to seek help immediately if he has trouble meeting any of his bail conditions.
Sources say De Gruchy will reside in Sydney.
He has obtained a bank account, Medicare card, tax file number, birth certificate, a photo ID card and a fork lift licence and Learner drivers license.
