At about 8pm on Monday, police received a call from a 23-year-old woman from the northern Sydney suburb of Artarmon.
She told police she and her friend had caught the train to Otford station and walked to the pools.
After apparently staying too long the pair had gotten lost lost in the bush while walking back in darkness.
Police made their way to the Garrawarra Farm car park, where the trail to the pools begins.
When they arrived at around 9pm they found the pair had made their way out of the bush.
The pair were cold - having not worn clothing suitable for the cold night - but uninjured.
Police drove them to Engadine station where they caught a train home.
