On August 31, the day immediately before Father's Day, Lakeside Memorial Park is helping families who have lost a father by giving them a chance to honour and connect with loved ones through a non-denominational, dedicated event at 10am.
Family Services manager Paul Michlmayr said the Wollongong and Illawarra community is invited to commemorate all fathers with a beautiful ceremony and music presentation.
"Prior to Mother's Day no memorial community days had been held in this park for a long time," he said.
"What we are trying to do is introduce more of these.
"The first Mother's Day event was so successful so we wanted to wanted to give families a chance to come in to celebrate their fathers.
"With this Father's Day event we have had a bit more time to get ready for it. We hope to make these annual events. They will always be held the Saturday before Father's Day and Mother's Day.
"We understand that families want to spend the actual day with their families so we hold it the day before. It will be a memorial service starting at 10am in chapel. We have locked in celebrant Paul Young. It will be about 40 minutes remembering fathers. And there will be a few poems".
After the memorial service there will be a morning tea and the opportunity to place flowers where a loved one is at rest at Lakeside Memorial Park.
"We will also give them little cards they can fill in with a message. They will be placed in the park at the end of this year as a rememberence for Mother's Day and Father's Day," Mr Michlmayr said.
"It will be like a permanent memorial for those who come to the park".
Mr Michlmayr said the August 31 event will enable families to share their cherished memories of those who have passed but not forgotten, with others in similar circumstances.
