The Illawarra knows a good cause when it sees one and throws its whole weight behind it.
There are number of events in the Illawarra's social calendar which are absolute staples and you just know the community will support them.
The Legacy Business and Community Lunch is one such event.
It's a day when this community recognises the sacrifices of our military families and provides support for those left behind when a loved one dies in service for our country.
Legacy was established in 1923 by ex-servicemen dedicated to the task of caring for the widows and dependents of their fallen comrades.
Legacy helps ease heavy financial commitments, provide companionship, help with children's education, ensure medical and welfare services are available or provide somebody to talk to.
Legacy Business and Community Support Committee chair David Swan said in our local area Legacy supported close to 600 widows and dependents.
"Since the inception of the luncheon over $330,000 has been raised which has been directed to both social and financial welfare for the loved ones of those who don't return home from their military service," he said.
"Legacy's assistance takes many forms, providing a level of support necessary for each individual situation.
"With the help of Legatees, who stay in touch with all families, Legacy ensures that families receive any required Legacy assistance and access to government benefits."
The event at City Diggers launches Legacy Appeal Week.
Legacy Week runs from September 1-8.
There will be Legacy members and students across our badges selling badges to raise money for this worthy cause.
