Australia were on top for the majority of Friday's clash at WIN Stadium, however they were able to convert the dominance into just one goal.

New Zealand hit back through a 70^th minute Clayton Lewis free kick to ensure the teams shared the spoils.

While disappointed not to secure the win, Russell said there were plenty of positives for the side to take out of the match ahead of their second clash in Campbelltown.

"We were a bit shaky at the start," Russell said. "But then we settled in and we started to take control.

"It was neck and neck the whole game, but I think we all settled in and started to play good football.

"We've got a second game against them now, we know how they play, so we can go back to the drawing board and see how we're going to attack and defend against them."

Having previously represented the Australian Under 20 side, Friday marked Russell's first appearance in the national under 23 team.

After impressing in his debut game, the 20-year-old is looking forward to having many more opportunities to pull on the green and gold.

"It's been a couple of years since I've played in front of my friends and family, so I really enjoyed it.

"My family are all buzzing for me, especially to make my 23s debut here where dad used to play, it's something close to the heart."
