The accident occurred on Foothills Road, Balgownie about 5.30pm.
NSW Ambulance Illawarra Inspector Norm Rees said a 64-year-old female was reportedly picking up some takeaway, and got out of the car and left the motor running.
She then realised she may not have secured the vehicle properly, as the car was moving, and went to try and get back in and secure it by putting the handbrake on a little further.
"The car's rolled back and knocked her over," Insp Rees said.
"She didn't go under the car, but the open door has scraped across her chest and abdomen, so she's got some abrasions from that, and she's got a fractured... left and dislocated shoulder."
The woman was transported to Wollongong Hospital.
No one else was involved in the incident.
