Community Day offers our people the chance to choose where they want to have a meaningful and positive impact...Cate Harris
Last week, Illawarra Aboriginal Corporation's Warrigal Employment worked with a group of volunteers on a key community project.
Warrigal Employment was one of more than 100 national causes selected as part of property group, Lendlease Foundation's annual Community Day initiative.
About 12 Lendlease volunteers assisted the Illawarra-based Aboriginal community organisation to expand its facilities by revamping unused space and turning it into a training room.
The main activities of the day included clearing the space, cleaning and painting.
Now in its 24th year, the Community Day aims to allow Lendlease employees to work alongside their colleagues, community partners and families.
Projects are selected by employees in areas or with organisations where Lendlease has a current or future presence.
Lendlease is already working with Warrigal Employment, alongside indigenous-owned social enterprise Muru Mittigar and the Illawarra Aboriginal Corporation to run the Calderwood Valley 'Caring for Country' Aboriginal Ranger Program.
This program involves full-time rangers, senior rangers and trainee rangers working on vegetation management along the Macquarie Rivulet.
The skills gained aim to prepare participants for future career pathways into landscape management and construction.
"Community Day offers our people the chance to choose where they want to have a meaningful and positive impact, volunteering their time and skills to make a difference," Cate Harris, Lendlease Group head of sustainability and Lendlease Foundation said.
"Last year more than 4000 Lendlease employees globally joined community volunteers, supporting over 240 Community Day projects."
Nyssa Murray, manager of Warrigal Employment said together the groups restored a training building that has been out of service.
"The restoration and revamp of the training building will allow Warrigal Employment more working space to offer and support our clients to achieve their employment and well-being goals."
