Five Barrel Brewing is eager to help local community groups in the Illawarra by hosting charity nights.
First up it wants to help SCARF in its efforts to connect locals and people from refugee backgrounds.
With a small number of staff and 250 volunteers SCARF coordinates support for more than 1,900 people from refugee backgrounds.
To do that it relies on locals to help run a range of assistance including youth clubs, driving lessons, homework help, job support and language education.
That grass-roots approach has caught the attention of the family-owned brewery in Wollongong which has always focused on sustainability and community.
Five Barrel Brewing is always keen to forge partnerships with organisations which share its values.
Phil O'Shea said the family business understands it depends on the support of locals and the community event on October 3 is another way to thank the community.
Five Barrel Brewing is opening its Keira Street brew house once a month as a dedicated charity evening.
"There is no doubt that the craft brew scene her in Wollongong is really growing," Mr O'Shea said.
"And that is only happening because of the support of the community. A big part of what Five Barrel Brewing wants to do now and in the future is to be a big part of the community".
As a result of the October 3 event Five Barrel Brewing will donate $5 to $10 from every burger and drink combo sold on the night, to SCARF.
The charity evening will run from 6pm-8pm and include a talk by a SCARF community member who will share some of their experience of what life has been like since arriving in Australia as a refugee.
There will also be music from local singer and songwriter LEO, and prizes including a pamper pack donated by Hospital Hill Pharmacy up for grabs.
SCARF chief executive Pippa Rendel said she was thrilled the organisation will be the first to benefit from the brewery's local focus.
"Connecting people through food and drink is a wonderful way to break down barriers and foster community," she said.
"We're really pleased to have this opportunity to share more about who SCARF is and what we do, while also supporting a local business that is keen to make a difference".
