Businesses and miners will also hold demonstrations ahead of the Global School Strike 4 Climate rally and march starting at noon.
The Wollongong rally will be held outside the Illawarra Performing Arts Centre in Burelli Street.
Organisers are intending to march up to Crown St Mall and back again before heading towards Flagstaff Hill.
There will be a community picket at the South32 office, UOW Innovation Campus at 10am.
Workers are not happy South32 are seeking approval for an extension to their controversial Dendrobium Mine, near Mt Kembla.
Other smaller actions will be held ahead of the main event, including one at the University of Wollongong.
Students and staff will meet at the Duck Pond at 11am before heading into the city.
UOW student and Wollongong Youth Environmental Alliance (YEA) member Darcy Turner said it was important as many people as possible hit the streets in support of the climate strike.
National Unions of Students (NUS) president Desiree Cai said thousands of students and staff across Australia were expected to walk out of university to join the global climate strike.
NSW Police Assistant Commissioner Michael Willing.said public safety is the first priority when it comes to protest activity.
"We support the rights of individuals and groups to protest peacefully, but not when it impedes on their safety and the safety of others. Unlawful behaviour will not be tolerated," he said.
"Police across the state will be working with protestors to ensure there are no breaches of the peace and there is minimal impact to the community."
