Shellharbour City Council Mayor Marianne Saliba said, "Cementing Shellharbour City's identity as a rapidly growing tourism and transport hub was a vital part of promoting the city as a destination. The feedback from our stakeholders only reaffirms this. The tourist potential can now be fully developed with the area identified as close to the ocean, harbour and new marina. In celebration of the new name, Council is pleased to be offering free parking."
Shellharbour City Council, together with the State Government via the Growing Local Economies Program, is investing just over $20m in airport infrastructure. The funding comprises a $15.97m State Government contribution with the remainder funded by Shellharbour City Council.
Fly Corporate sales manager Geoff Woodham said, "Fly Corporate is thrilled with the scope of the upcoming development projects. It is pleasing to see Council backing the airport and facilitating the resources needed to meet the growing demand for our direct Melbourne and Brisbane airline services from the Illawarra region, and those wanting to visit. The rebrand reflects the airport's location and will assist in growing Shellharbour's reputation as a tourism destination in its own right. It's a beautiful city."

Between now and early 2021, Shellharbour City Council will undertake significant infrastructure works. This includes the delivery of a new terminal building enhancing the customer experience and replacing the old terminal which tragically burnt down in 2013.
Over 8000 tonnes of asphalt will be used to renew taxiways and both runways. The installation of airport lighting on the cross runway will facilitate night-time landings when westerly winds arrive. The installation of services and significant earthworks, equivalent to nine olympic swimming pools of soil, will pave the way for an aviation business park including the construction of an access road adjoining Tongarra Road.
Bob De La Hunty, president of the Historical Aircraft Restoration Society (HARS) based at Shellharbour Airport said, "HARS had been a full supporter of the Council's development plans for the airport since setting up the flying museum in early 2000. We are delighted that Shellharbour City Council have been able to have the airport's name changed to truly reflect where it is, and the community who support it."
You can now follow the airport on Facebook and Instagram @shellharbourairport. The official website will be launched in mid-October at shellharbourairport.com.au (currently active and will redirect to Council's website in the interim).
