Teenager Jack Edwards and Moises Henriques put on 121 for the second wicket at just shy of a run-a-ball to have NSW well placed at 2-172 in the 33rd over.
Having past 50 for the third time in his six-innings career, Edwards seemed on track for a ton only to be caught on the boundary for 84 off the bowling of Billy Stanlake (2-49).
The tall paceman was the pick of the Queensland attack, helping bring his side back into the contest as the Blues threatened a massive total.
Henriques went almost immediately after Edwards, skying a delivery off spinner Matthew Kuhnemann to be dismissed for 52 as the Bulls slowed the run rate during the middle overs.
Standing in for rested Test star Steve Smith, debutant Nick Bertus quickly found his confidence for an impressive 69 not out off 60 balls.
In concert with wicketkeeper Peter Nevill (26 off 18 balls), the pair added 64 invaluable runs in the latter overs as NSW reached 5-305.
