Ball has brought unprecedented global exposure to the Hawks and the NBL since arriving in Wollongong as part of the league's Next Stars program.

The hype went into overdrive following a 19-point display against Perth at the NBL Blitz, one that saw him shoot to number three on ESPN's 2020 mock draft standings.

It's put him in the frame as a possible No. 1 pick at next year's draft and prompted talk that he could cut his NBL stint short should his stocks continue to rise over the first half of the season.

The same talk has surrounded fellow Draft aspirant and New Zealand recruit RJ Hampton, a projected top 10 pick who was also a standout for the Breakers at the Blitz.

Both are contracted to the NBL as part of the Next Stars program and, as such, are not contracted directly to their respective clubs but Campbell said he hasn't felt the need to seek any assurances from the league despite the reports.

"My understanding is that he'll be here for the whole year, I don't know anything different from my end," Campbell said.

"We sign an agreement to take him on but the contract itself sits with the NBL. From the NBL's point of view, any person they're going to invest in bringing out here they're going to want them here for the duration of that [contract] tenure.

"I couldn't see any real value in them wanting to cut it short, I don't think it would help in any way. You never know but there's been absolutely no indication that that's a plan at all or even a possibility.

"All indications are from the [Ball] camp that he's very happy, his agent's rapt with Lamelo's development from what he's been able show in the preseason.

"He's a big part of our team and we want him to be the best he can possibly be and it's business as usual in the Hawks camp."

It's understood there is nothing in Ball's NBL contract that guarantees he sees out the full NBL season, but Campbell says it's in the best interests of all parties for the 18-year-old to get a full campaign under his belt.

"I see a lot more value [for Ball] in finishing the season than just going into the start of it," Campbell said.

"If I'm an NBA GM I'd be looking at how he goes through a whole season as far as interaction and how his body holds up over the length of time.

"I think that's a big part of being drafted. I didn't see Zion [Williamson] just sitting on the sideline once everyone knew he was going to be a No.1 Draft pick.

"I understand [media] talk of potentially parking him and that sort of thing is of interest but there's enough time at the end of our season to get the body right to go into any kind of [training] camp that they need to.

"There's been nothing said to me from the Ball camp at all and especially from his agent, they've been really supportive and we're confident he'll be here for the whole time."

Ball will make his first regular season appearance for the Hawks in Wollongong on Sunday, his second outing at the WEC after last week's trial loss to the Kings.
