Luke and his father Robert are quietly confident about their five runners' chances at the Illawarra Turf Club's Disability Trust Race for Kids Day.

Five-year-old gelding Cuban Royale is among the favourites to win the Bruce Tener Memorial over 1000m while Winter in America, Accoy, Beaurama and Mohican are expected to put in strong showings.

However, standing in their way are runners trained by some of Australia's biggest names.

"Snowden. Waller. Waterhouse. Baker. They're always hard to beat and they're powerful, but hopefully we can compete with them," Luke Price said.

"I think we've got a few really good chances. Cuban Royale has never won over 1000 metres but it's the right race for him - the small field suits him.

"He's the best horse in the race and I think he will be hard to beat."

With rain forecast for Saturday, punters will regularly check for weather updates in the lead-up to the races.

Price has spent time at Kembla Grange this week and he likes what he sees.

"The track is in outstanding condition, I just hope we don't get too much rain," he said.

"I know a couple of my runners have handled it [a heavy track] before and they can handle it again. But we may end up with three runners instead."

The David Pfieffer-trained Legislation is the short-priced favourite to win the Illawarra Toyota Handicap over 1200m.

Legislation will also line up against Cuban Royale on Saturday.

He is partly owned by former Wollongong Wolves coach Jacob Timpano, who admits the four-year-old gelding is under pressure to perform.

"He hasn't been doing much chop," he said.

"They nickname him 'Morning Glory' because he does everything right in training. But come race day, he hasn't been able to deliver.

"I think he's on his last couple of chances. Hopefully on the long straight at Kembla, he might be up there in the finish."
