A good reference book is probably the best way to correctly ID the fish you catch but who of us actually carry such a reference when we head out?
NSW DPI/Fisheries FishSmart App is a free and valuable method that can be downloaded and provides 24/7 access to info on the differences between a range of similar species.
If you need more detail, DPI's NSW Recreational Saltwater and Freshwater Fishing Guides provide additional information on commonly misidentified fish such as Australian bass/estuary perch, yellowfin bream/tarwhine, mulloway/teragalin, various flatheads, crayfish and yabbie species, golden and silver perch, shortfin and longfin eels and eastern cod/trout cod/Murray cod.
You can get a copies of both guides at your local NSW DPI Fisheries office, online at https://bit.ly/2Ga2GqL or from your local Fishcare Volunteer as well as any number of tackle shops.
The guides are also available in digital format via the FishSmart app.
For more information about FishSmart, including how to download it, see https://bit.ly/2zv1Ilw.
A handy tip if you catch a fish you're unable to identify is to carefully release it as it is always better to be safe than sorry.
