Police were called to St George Avenue just before 10am on April 9, following reports a man had had his silver Range Rover stolen at gun-point by a man known to him and with whom he had a personal dispute.
Officers were Glenn Robert Wilson attended the home and was buzzed through the front gate by the 48-year-old resident.
Wilson asked to see the Range Rover parked in the front driveway.
However, moments later, he allegedly allegedly "fiddled" in the back of his pants and pulled out a gun, pointing it towards the victim and ordering him to get on the ground.
After demanding the keys, Wilson allegedly reversed the car out of the driveway and drove off, threatening the victim not to contact police as he went.
The mercury understands some of the incident is captured on CCTV cameras at the house.
Meanwhile, a large-scale search involving highway patrol officers and PolAir eventually tracked the Range Rover to Berkeley.
Wollongong police issued an arrest warrant for Wilson later that day.
He handed himself in a week later and was charged with armed robbery.
Wilson was remanded in custody and has been behind bars ever since.
On Wednesday, defence lawyer Matthew Ward confirmed Wilson will mount a defence on mental illness when the case is heard at trial next year.
The matter was set down for arraignment later this month, at which time Wilson is expected to formally enter a not guilty plea to the charge.
