Police were called to a unit on Shellharbour Road at Warilla on Tuesday, following concerns for the welfare of a man living there.
Lake Illawarra police were unable to raise anyone at the unit and entered the home to search for the man.
A short time later, a crime scene warrant was executed at the premises, with officers seizing a mobile phone and other child abuse material.
The resident - a 52-year-old man - was arrested after he arrived home during the warrant and taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station, where he was later charged with three counts of possessing child abuse material.
He was refused bail to appear at Wollongong Local Court on Wednesday.
