The development application for the Anglicare project, recently approved by Wollongong City Council, is for 28 studio and one-bedroom units.
The project will be located at 145-149 Princes Highway, Corrimal.
Facilities in the five-storey building will include a retail area, internal communal space, barbecue facilities, communal spaces and on-site parking.
According to Anglicare, the proposed target demographic is senior women (aged over 55) or Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women (aged over 45) who are in need of long-term, secure affordable housing.
"Anglicare has provided affordable accommodation for people in financial need for decades," Rob Burnelek, Anglicare's general manager of housing said.
"Anglicare's development at Corrimal will seek to provide high-quality affordable housing as well as support services for residents.
"We also want to create a safe environment where renters can foster meaningful connections with the wider community."
In Anglicare's annual housing affordability snapshot, they identified that there is a shortage of suitable housing for those on low incomes.
Therefore, Anglicare is aiming to develop suitable housing across a number of sites, and will determine closer to the completion date the "optimal mix" of social and affordable housing for the project.
In a report last year, Anglicare stated that residents of the Corrimal project will be selected based on the type of housing assistance program that they are participating in.
"For social housing residents, residents will be sourced according to the NSW Housing Pathways system," the report said.
"For affordable housing residents, residents will be sourced according to Anglicare's Affordable Housing Allocation Plan."
Work on the development recently began, with the project estimated for completion by October 2020.
