Frente - famous for upbeat 1990s pop hit Accidently Kelly Street - headlined the main stage, and music, arts and food lovers of all ages crowded in to MacCabe Park to enjoy the 20th iteration of the festival.
Opening the event, Wollongong Lord Mayor Gordon Bradbery said he was "blessed to live in a talented city".
"Wollongong is a diverse and exciting place with a vast number of cultures that have joined us to make this a rather exciting livable and engaging city," he said.
Viva La Gong was one three major events attracting thousands of people to the CBD on Saturday, with motorcycle and racing fans heading to Lang Park and WIN Stadium for a motorcycle festival and the Supercross Championship.
