The Salvation Army has launched a nationwide appeal to support communities affected by the devastating bush fires in NSW and Queensland.
Illawarra community fundraising and public relations coordinator for the Salvation Army Karen Walker said on Tuesday the real need for fire victims at this stage was monetary assistance.
"We're not taking food or clothing donations at the moment because the logistics make it impossible to get those items into affected areas," Mrs Walker said.
"The time for those sort of donations will come and we'll certainly push that out when it is time to do that."
Mrs Walker said people could make donations via the national Salvation Army avenues.
"Or they can certainly drop into our Burelli St offices and make a donation that way," she said.
The Salvation Army Appeal, in partnership with Woolworths, is aiming to raise $3 million and was kickstarted with a $500,000 donation by the supermarket retailer on Saturday.
Anyone can donate by visiting salvationarmy.org.au, calling 13 SALVOS (13 72 58) or by making a donation at any Woolworths checkout.
