Lake Illawarra police attended a home on Byamee Street about 3.30pm following reports a woman was in need of assistance.
On arrival, a police officer was allegedly punched in the chest by a woman, before the woman turned and slapped another officer.
Police said the woman attempted to spit at officers before locking herself in a caravan in the backyard of the property.
Officers negotiated with the woman before she opened the door and again attacked police.
With the assistance of NSW Ambulance paramedics, the woman was taken to Wollongong Hospital for assessment.
Officers located and seized drugs and drug paraphernalia from the property.
A male police officer was taken to Wollongong Hospital for tests.
Police inquiries are continuing.
