Earlier this week, Transport for NSW released four options to deal with the need to carry out vital slope stabilisation work in the Stanwell Park area.
All options include a complete closure of the road for some period of time, with two options also featuring regular closures during the day and night.
Cr Colacino represents residents in the northern suburbs and was opposed to the initial plan for two four-week closures.
"What they have presented to the community is certainly a major step forward from when they first presented it all those months ago and said, 'this is the option'," Cr Colacino said.
"They obviously recognised the impost of the two-month closure would have just been over the top for the northern Illawarra."
With a closure, it will see all traffic funnelled through the Thirroul CBD and Bulli Pass, which is one area that concerns Cr Colacino.
"I'm still not sure with the situation at the bottom of Bulli Pass; how that's going to be managed during that period of total closure as well as those closed periods between 9am and 3pm and 8pm and 4am," he said.
"That will be really interesting to get an idea of that."
The Illawarra Business Chamber was also pleased with the extra options but noted impacts on business owners would still be felt during any road closures "which remain extensive under all four options presented".
"I understand that these works are necessary, and that the closure has to proceed," said Illawarra Business Chamber Executive Director Adam Zarth.
"However, for businesses located in Stanwell Park, Coledale, Austinmer, Thirroul and even Helensburgh, trade will undeniably be affected."
Residents can view the four closure options put forward and vote for their preferred one via an online survey at rms.work/lhd-closure.
The survey period will end at 5pm on December 16.
