There's headlands of the northern suburbs, the rise of Brokers Nose, Mount Keira and Mount Kembla, and suburbs scattered into the foothills of the escarpment.
To the east there's the apartment towers along Cliff Road, the lighthouse standing tall on Flagstaff Hill and, further south, Port Kembla harbour and the Five Islands.
For now, any glimpse of the suburbs around Lake Illawarra are blocked by scaffolding, but you can see the hills beyond Dapto fading into the distance.
That is the view from a building named "Signature", which is due to be completed by the end of next year and is one of many towers currently transforming how the city looks in a dramatic way.
Already Wollongong's CBD has been boosted by $1.5 billion in investment in recent years, with $400 million more in the pipeline.
And while a much more elevated skyline is inevitable in Wollongong, based on the list of proposed or approved towers in the works, the Signature and Skye Tower buildings could end up holding the city's height record for a long time.
Next year, the council is due to review one of its most powerful documents, the Local Environmental Plan.
This sets out zoning rules and height limits for the city, and - according to Lord Mayor Gordon Bradbery - the CBD will be the first area to come under scrutiny.
With the view of the escarpment from the beach already punctuated by looming towers, Cr Bradbery said he would be looking to preserve remaining sight lines by reviewing heights in some areas.
