The burst main, outside the Night Parrot wine bar, was reported around 6pm.
Water is flowing up out of the footpath and down Crown Street, forcing Fire and Rescue NSW to close the road between Kembla and Corrimal streets.
No businesses have been evacuated or damaged as the water flowed down the pavement and street rather than under closed doors.
Sydney Water has been notified and crews are on the scene.
It is understood crews are shutting off the water to Crown Street premises at Corrimal and Kembla streets meaning businesses in that section of Crown Street will be without water for a number of hours.
Night Parrot Bar & Kitchen has posted on Facebook that it will be closed on Friday night due to the burst main.
Howlin' Wolf Bar has also closed its doors for Friday
It's the second time in three months a water main has burst in that section of Crown Street.
In November a water main burst outside Lee and Me, forcing the evacuation of the cafe because the pavement was at risk of collapse.
