A collaboration of Wollongong and Shellharbour City Councils, a new colour brochure guide, funded by a grant from the NSW Local Land Services, highlights the diverse variety of birds that live in and migrate to Lake Illawarra each year.
The new Birds of Lake Illawarra brochure includes images of common birds you may see around the lake, and provides information on their preferred habitat.
The brochure suggests four walks you can do to spot various birds and the best times to go birdwatching.
Annie Marlow is one of the Wollongong community representatives on the Lake Illawarra Estuary Management Committee, and a member of the Illawarra Birders.
"It's also got lots of tips about what people can do to make sure we're looking after the birds in Lake Illawarra," she said.
"It provides community information about the area and caring for the environment of the area, and the birds are a good indication of whether we've got a healthy environment or not."
The brochure is one of the actions listed in the draft Coastal Management Program for the lake that was recently put out for community consultation.
The program is expected to be reported to the respective councils in the next few months, prior to being submitted to the NSW Government for certification.
