Lake Illawarra police were called to Lakeview Parade following reports of a domestic disturbance about 3pm.
A man aged in his 30s locked himself inside his home.
NSW Ambulance Illawarra Chief Inspector Terry Morrow said specialist operations police including the technical response unit were called in to negotiate with the man.
After hours of negotiation, the man gave himself up and the incident was resolved peacefully around 9.15pm.
Insp Morrow said the man was taken to Wollongong Hospital with minor injuries after he smashed a window.
"The police did an excellent job to negotiate with man to give himself up without incident," he said.
Mr Morrow said the man was the only person inside the home.
