Hydrangeas are one of the more popular blue flowering plants in Australian gardens and the blue colour will depend on soil pH.
Acid soils produce blue flowers and alkaline soils, pink ones.
To ensure hydrangeas will produce blue flowers apply aluminium sulfate, commonly referred to as hydrangea blueing food to the soil to lower the pH.
Other classic blue flowering plants include delphimium, iris, agapanthus, forget me nots, plumbago and grape hyacinth.
One classic blue flowering garden treasure is the Himalayan poppy, Mecanaposis betonicifolia, a sought-after plant that can be quite temperamental.
It is difficult to grow as it originates from the mountains of Tibet and requires a cool, moist climate to succeed.
There are of course many other classic blue flowering plants to choose from.
No other colour in the garden can compare with the healing properties that blue provides in all its varied hues and tones.
