The local inspector for Fire and Rescue NSW said the fire started from a ceiling fan in a level one bathroom of the club in Church Street, Wollongong.
The fire was extinguished at around 7pm but police and four FRNSW trucks are still on the scene cleaning up.
"There's a lot of black smoke so we are in the process of clearing that," the inspector said.
"There is some smoke damage to the ceiling and fan."
Police have closed part of Church Street, while firefighters clear the area of smoke.
